Tom Madine, president and CEO of Worldwide Express, describes ways job seekers could unintentionally ruin their job search
Tom Madine, president and CEO of Worldwide Express, describes ways job seekers could unintentionally ruin their job search

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) April 22, 2014 -- Worldwide Express, a Dallas-based global package and freight-shipping firm, outlined the top five ways new college graduates ruin their chances of becoming full-time employees. Although job seekers frequently receive advice from articles or career advisors on steps that can land them a job, many fail to consider the mistakes that could cost them the position – and how to avoid them.

It may seem pointless at the time, but understanding how your actions are perceived by potential employers can dramatically impact a never-ending job search.

“As a top workplace for new professionals, we’ve seen a wide array of job applicants here at Worldwide Express,” said Tom Madine, president and chief executive officer of Worldwide Express. “It may seem pointless at the time, but understanding how your actions are perceived by potential employers can dramatically impact a never-ending job search.”

To help new professionals avoid unintentionally ruining their job search, Worldwide Express described the top five missteps to avoid.

1. Getting crazy on social media
Once something is posted on any social media platform, it is available for anyone – and more importantly – any company, to view.

“Nowadays, employers could stumble across a candidate profile before setting up an interview,” said Madine. “Once a photo, tweet or Facebook update goes viral, know it is out there for anyone to see.”

2. Not doing any research
Going into a job interview with no background knowledge on the company, employees or the position is a good way to not get hired. This indicates to the employer a lack of interest and enthusiasm about the company. The best thing to do prior to an interview is look over the company website, research the industry and draft questions to ask the interviewer.

It is commonly known that not only should the company interview the candidate, but the candidate should also interview the employer to determine if the company is a good fit. Putting together a list of questions demonstrates curiosity and interest in the company.

3. Using an old résumé
It is important to tailor résumés and cover letters for each specific position. Although it may be tedious and time-consuming, submitting a résumé catered for the position shows an employer what a candidate has to offer and demonstrates how closely their goals align with the company’s vision.

“A 2012 Career Builder survey found that 61 percent of hiring managers will not consider an employee with typos in his or her résumé,” said Madine. “You can never have too many eyes proofread your job application and cover letter before submitting.”

4. Abandoning networking connections
Job seekers tend to forget to keep in touch with connections after landing a full-time position. This can ruin future opportunities or recommendations – not to mention missing out on a potential career mentor. Though it may not be practical to keep in touch with every single connection, a monthly email check-in can make a great difference.

5. Holding out for a specific job
The most important factor to remember is that in many cases, graduates should be prepared to start at the bottom and work their way up.

“Instead of holding out for that perfect dream job, one should consider building their resume in the process,” said Madine. “Keep in mind: your first job does not necessarily mean it will be your last, and there’s always opportunity to move up. With enthusiasm, curiosity and willingness to work hard, the sky’s the limit.”
