Wounded Warriors March to Commemorate Veterans in Bataan Death March
Reston, VA (PRWEB) March 14, 2016 -- Sunday, March 20, members of the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team (WWAST) will join other Military individuals, as well as civilians, in the Bataan Memorial Death March in White Sands Missile Range, NM. The march honors Veterans who risked their freedom, health, and lives to defend the Philippine Islands during World War II. Opening ceremonies for the march begin at 6:35am and participants will begin to march at 7am.
The Bataan Memorial Death March is a particularly special event for the WWAST, especially for team member, Frank Wasson, who also is organizing this year’s march. Wasson has two relatives who were in the original Bataan Death March during World War II.
“It's an honor to be marching in memory of my two relatives Lorenzo Banegas and Wayne Wasson who courageously survived the Bataan Death March in 1942,” says Frank Wasson, WWAST member and retired US Army. “Both were in the 200th Coast Artillery Regiment out of New Mexico. Their memory will help to propel me, along with my fellow teammates, to take on the 26.2m challenge through the New Mexico desert. The Bataan Memorial Death March is a great way to honor our Bataan Veterans, while pushing ourselves physically and mentally as veteran amputees, to show that "life without limb is limitless.”
The Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team is a charitable organization whose mission is to inspire and educate others while enhancing the health and welfare of wounded warrior amputees. This organization is a perfect example of how a positive attitude, commitment, dedication and perseverance allow these warriors to overcome any obstacle. The WWAST is comprised of athletic amputee veterans and active duty servicemen and women who travel the country playing abled-bodied teams in competitive, celebrity and exhibition softball games.
“We are excited to be able to field a team for the Bataan Memorial Death March this year,” says Dennis Wince, Executive Director of WWAST. “The goal of our organization is to inspire and educate others about our current generation of Wounded Warriors. There is no better way to accomplish that goal than by honoring the past generation of Warriors who kept our Nation free.”
