WTA TennisStar, Genie Bouchard and Coach Saviano Set Sights on Summer Slams
Plantation, FL (PRWEB) April 30, 2014 -- Summer tennis season is heating up. Both at the junior level and at the top, those atop the charts and the masses on a mission to topple their peers are in full swing—training physically, preparing mentally, practicing tactically. On the WTA Tour, its clay court season in Europe as players prep for the red dirt of Roland Garros. And the desire to watch of many is Miss Eugenie Bouchard, WTA’s 2013 “Newcomer of the Year”. The Canadian continues to be newsworthy as longtime coach Nick Saviano has helped change skills to weapons and expanded an arsenal that has already delivered a semifinal run at the year’s opening Grand Slam in Australia. The showing vaulting her to #19 in the world, “Genie” became the youngest player in the top-20 (currently #18).
Saviano has helped develop the games of other emerging young talents like American Sloane Stephens and the WTA’s 2012 “Newcomer of the Year”, Briton Laura Robson. But after declining several offers to travel from players over the years, Saviano decided to return to a limited away schedule with Bouchard. “She can process information very quickly, and she applies it,” Saviano said of Bouchard, who started worked with the former ATP player and former USTA Director of High Performance when she was 12. “She’s a very good athlete, she has good focus, and she has other factors. She feels comfortable on a big stage, which helps.”
Comfort on a big stage was helpful earlier this month when Bouchard scored another semifinal appearance at a major WTA event in Charleston, defeating former #1 Jelena Jankovic and future Hall of Famer Venus Williams.
Saviano said he believes Genie is capable of raising her game to a level where simply playing her own game could be enough to beat anyone. “She’ll make tactical adjustments, and so on, but it’s more about her developing her skills and being able to impose her skills on other people as opposed to constantly reacting to everyone else,” he said. “When you watch Nadal or Federer or Serena Williams or Sharapova, they make little adjustments, but basically you’re seeing them impose their game on other people, and that’s the mentality I want you to see from her.”
Major events are coming soon (Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros) and Genie’s elevated ranking means that she is now directly into tournaments that will put her against the very best in the world, veterans and seasoned Tour players who’ve played through the same pivotal point in a career that she now faces. “I do try to walk around like I belong there, and play like I belong, and every time I walk on the court I believe I can win,” she said. “I think that’s really important, to have that self-confidence. Off the court, I think I’m not cocky, I’m pretty humble, and I don’t want to act like I’ve been there when I haven’t. But when little things come, like winning some matches at Slams, I just try to take it in stride. Because I expect a lot from myself.”
It’s nice to have an ‘army’ in your corner (see “Genie’s Army”), but it comes down to the player, a philosophy and execution. With Bouchard’s results to date, her take on her potential and the path to achieve it and a team that includes a proven mentor – a coach who can keep her in the moment and grounded on the task currently at hand – there’s good reason to anticipate a few peers being toppled as Genie’s march through summer moves on.
