DETROIT – (PRWEB) July 16, 2015 -- A phone call out of the blue from the daughter of a former Army colleague leads Jimmy Adair to reminisce about his days as a soldier in the waning months of World War Two. As a private, he traveled across war-torn Germany and into Austria recovering famous art from Nazi hiding places, and this new novel from Dog Ear Publishing follows his fictional story, inspired by historic events. This coming-of-age novel features a young man trying to make sense of the brutalities of war.
“Over There,” told in flashbacks, describes the service of Adair and the pair he is assigned to drive: art historian Lt. Alan West and his French colleague, the beautiful Olivette Normandin. On their quest to find art stolen by the Nazis, they encounter refugees from across Europe and Nazi camp guards in settings ranging from a newly liberated concentration camp to salt mines and castles and even Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest high in the Alps. They take on an unexpected task and put themselves at risk to save art at any cost.
Inspired by the Monuments Men and their duty to recover the art treasures of Europe looted in the war, the novel blends descriptive imagery and history, bringing to life an age-old story of the collateral damage done – and the unforgettable friendships forged – by war.
Detroit native R. J. Reilly served with a U.S. Army combat engineering battalion in Germany and France during World War Two, then went on to college to earn a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English and American literature. He taught for more than 30 years at the University of Detroit, publishing a body of scholarly works. His fiction includes the novels and short story volumes “The Prevalence of Love: Glimpses of the Human Condition,” also released by Dog Ear Publishing, and “Weekend in the Country,” “The Pelican Affair,” “The Bronte House,” and “On the Trail of Truth: Stories about Americans in an Age of Uncertainty.” He has two daughters and a large extended family.
