Yourwellness Magazine Celebrates Prestigious Prize for Alternative Medicine
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 30 November 2013 -- Sunita Vohra has been named this year's recipient of a prestigious Canadian award that recognizes excellence in complementary and alternative medicine, the Huffington Post reported November 17th. The article, “Edmonton Doctor Trying To Take Alternative Medicine Mainstream,” noted that Vohra, the director of Canada's first academic paediatric integrative at the University of Alberta medicine programme who was named the winner of the $250,000 Dr. Rogers Prize, started learning about complementary medicine when she first heard the needs of patients. Vohra commented, ‘If everything starts with a patient as the centre of your primary interest, then their interests, their values, their questions are the things that need to matter to you most as their health care provider.’
With this in mind, Yourwellness Magazine detailed the different therapies involved in complementary medicine. Yourwellness Magazine explained, ‘Complementary medicine is an expanding field, and one which could greatly benefit your wellness and well-being if you were able to get to grips with it. NCCAM is an organisation which covers the field of alternative and complementary medicine, and defines this as a group of diverse health care systems, products and practices which are not currently thought of as part of the conventional medical system. Yourwellness Magazine outlined four major therapies involved in complementary medicine:
1. Homeopathy. This uses the body’s ability to self-heal by using extremely small doses of strongly diluted remedies. In larger doses, these remedies would produce negative symptoms, but these lower doses are thought to work with the body in a way as to immunise itself against them.
2. Naturopathic medicine. This is a medical system that works in harmony with the body’s self-healing ability. Dietary and lifestyle changes are used as part of this system, alongside natural remedies, massages, herbs as well as joint manipulation.
3. Ayurveda. This focuses on the mind, body and spirit and works in a holistic way to help prevent as well as treat all kinds of diseases. In this medical system there are various herbal remedies, yoga and massages used to help treat the patient in every way possible.
4. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This works on the idea that diseases are the result of blockages of energy (Qi) in the body. Therapies used in this treatment include massage, medication (herbal), acupuncture and meditation.
