A Bureau of Labor statistics report released Tuesday painted a bright outlook for youth employment. Over 2.1 million young people ranging from age 16 to 24 found jobs between April and July of this year. This was the highest jump in three years. According to the report, youth employment was concentrated in what have been traditionally popular sectors for entry-level workers: retail, hospitality, and leisure.
Young people who work prior to graduating from school increase their likelihood of finding full-time employment after graduation. In the current market, young people are competing against more experienced workers – and often losing out. Gaining experience while they are still in school, even if that experience comes unpaid, will pay off in the long term. Employers are more likely to give serious consideration to an entry-level worker with at least some experience versus someone who has no experience at all. Young people who work while they are in school have that much more of a leg up once they graduate and need to find full-time jobs.
Many of the skills learned in jobs typically employed by teens can easily transfer over to other careers. Retail, for example, is a popular first job for many young people, and can teach skills like customer service, management, and sales. Gaining experience earlier makes the learning curve that much easier later on. Even on a practical level, students who work while in school often learn how to manage their time better than their peers and are able to graduate with less student debt.
