YouTube Sensation And LGBTQ Advocate Tyler Oakley Reveals His Coming Out Story And Comments On The Rise Of Trans Icon Laverne Cox On Maria Menounos' AfterBuzz TV Network
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 18, 2014 -- In 2008, Tyler Oakley created his first YouTube vlog, and now, he’s one of the most well-know personalities on the platform. That, coupled with his amazing work for The Trevor Project, has skyrocketed Tyler’s star and garnered him over 4.5 million subscribers, as well as world-wide exposure and influence.
On Thursday, Oakley appeared on Maria Menounos' “aftershow” network, AfterBuzz TV, where he was interviewed by Jillian Leff as part of the network's Spotlight On series. During the interview, Oakley discussed his personal coming out story, and Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox's transgender movement.
When asked about his 'coming out', Oakley was open and honest, revealing a struggle with his torn family and their opposing views on sexuality, "My parents are divorced, and so it's split into two sets of families. One was super liberal and very open-minded. One was kind of conservative, religious and not so open-minded to the gay stuff. With one family it was great, and then for the other it was not so great. There were moments when they offered to help 'fix it' or offered to send me somewhere to get it changed. Or asking me if this was a cry for attention. Or me being rebellious. But just as much as I had that, I had my other set of family that was one hundred percent supportive and there for me."
Oakley also took time to address Laverne Cox's meteoric rise to fame and her influence on the transgender community. He explains his support and the good Cox is doing for trans culture."When it comes to the trans community, some people don't even validate that type of existence...It's super important for me to give as much love and open attention to people like Laverne...I have so much respect and love [for her]."
