Yuriko Miyake Shares 5 Ways to Figure Out Your Passion and Live Your Wildest Dream

Born in Hiroshima, Yuriko's aspiration was to become a world-class artist ever since her childhood. Last year, her life-long pursuit and dream to perform on a stage version of the legendary Hayao Miyazaki’s film, Princess Mononoke finally came true. Here are some of her tips and insights on how she made this dream and other aspirations possible.
Tip 1: Listen to Your Inner Voice
We all have that little chatter in our heads. Yuriko says, “the key to figure out your real passion and know what you really want to do, is about being honest with yourself by listening to your heart. Put money, status, and all the worries aside, making your mind a blank sheet of paper may help you tune in to the voice." Deep down inside, we know what will make us happy. After all, being honest with one's inner voice may be the shortcut to one's happiness.
Tip 2: Pay Attention to the Little Things (Feelings)
Yuriko explains, “when watching particular movies or reading books, I pay attention to my feelings. When I get excited and feel special about some particular topic, I just know that's where the message I want to express embodies.” Things that attract you are special to you and that will become the source of your drive and further inspiration, and we can know it through our intuitive guide called “feelings.”
Tip 3: Share Your Dreams with Others
Having a dream is great, but sharing with others verbally makes it even better and stronger. “Putting your dream into words and sharing with others will eventually change the surrounding of yours,” Yuriko says. Yuriko and her friend one day jokingly talked about the role she would play if the film, Princess Mononoke became a play. 3 days later, the film Princess Mononoke was announced to be made into a play, and she went to audition right away. When you share your dreams with others with words, you may start to see the difference around yourself.
Tip 4: Pursue Your Dreams with Others
It will be essential to create a team that shares the same vision of yours. Yuriko describes, “dream is not a single person’s activity, but is rather a teamwork that makes your dream possible.” When Yuriko started her solo-performance, The Puppet Train, she did everything from the production to selling tickets, but tremendous pressure and stress showed up as a skin and physical problem. Today, she is not hesitant to ask for other's help when necessary, with her knowledge and much appreciation that the teamwork is the key to any project's success.
Tip 5: Just Try It!
“When I have an idea, I usually just try it. Challenging the assumptions, fixed ideas, and status quo is necessary for new things to be born,” Yuriko says. Besides acting, Yuriko took up an opportunity to speak at a seminar last year. With no speaking experience, she was unsure about the outcome. Turned out, many people went up to her after the seminar, thanking her for the empowerment, courage, great advice and insights. As Yuriko says, "you just don't really know till you try it!"
Overall, staying true to yourself, following intuition, and finding the right mates to be on the journey with are the most essential part in following the passion and making dreams come true. Today, Yuriko is on her way to becoming a world-class artist to spread and express her love to the mankind.
Yuriko's next performance, The Puppet Train, a Buddhism inspired solo musical will be held on April 11th and 12th. Through this performance, she expresses her insights and candid thoughts on life, love, and the dreams.
