ZCorum Announces Release of Smartphone App for Remote Spectrum Analysis at The Independent Show
Kansas City, MO (PRWEB) July 28, 2014 -- ZCorum, a leading provider of managed broadband services and diagnostics, announced today at The Independent Show that their remote spectrum analysis app, RF Inspector, now supports Android-based smartphones. RF Inspector uses the ability within newer cable modems and set-top boxes to capture and display the spectrum for all video and data channels much like it would appear on a meter, eliminating the need for technicians to drive to a customer’s location to read spectrum data.
ZCorum initially introduced RF Inspector in May with support for Android-based tablets. Scott Helms, Vice President of Technology for ZCorum, said smartphone support makes the inexpensive app an even more attractive alternative to meters. “Both the tablet and smartphone version let you view spectrum remotely wherever you have Internet access, but most people don’t have a data plan with their tablet, so they’re limited to areas with Wi-Fi access. Now, technicians who have an Android-based smartphone can troubleshoot spectrum issues on their phone, almost anywhere they happen to be.”
The RF Inspector app can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store, although there is a $9.95 annual subscription fee for each user of the app. In addition, there is a server-side component that communicates with cable modems and controls who has access to view spectrum using the RF Inspector app. ZCorum is making the server-side software available for free to NCTC members.
According to Julie Compann, President and CEO at ZCorum, the low price-point for RF Inspector has been hard to communicate at times. “Operators are used to paying hundreds of dollars or more for a single piece of equipment to view downstream spectrum, so when they see the price of $9.95 per year they think it must mean per modem. We have to explain that it really is only $9.95 per technician who uses the app.” Compann said the product fits perfectly with her company’s goal to improve efficiency and reduce costs for service providers. “With RF Inspector we’re not only increasing the efficiency in how cable operators troubleshoot downstream issues, we’re doing it at a price that allows them to put a powerful spectrum analysis tool in the hands of more of their technicians.”
