A research team on behalf of the Indonesian Parrot Project rediscovered the Yellow-crested Abbott's cockatoo this summer in the Masalembu Archipelago. Ten cockatoos have been identified--four males, four females, and two juveniles--making them the most threatened cockatoo in the wild and one of the world's rarest birds.

(PRWeb October 22, 2008)

Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/rare/cockatoo/prweb1506694.htm

16 Seram (Moluccan) Cockatoos and 4 Purple-Naped Lories Released Back to the Wild on Seram Island, Eastern Indonesia

The illegal wild bird trade remains rampant in Indonesia, and includes a number of parrot species; populations of some of these are considered vulnerable to future extinction. Enforcement of laws protecting parrots is critical, and such interdiction has recently been stepped up in Central Maluku by officers of BKSDA (Conservation and Natural Resources) and the Department of Forestry. However, the problem then remains as to the disposition of birds captured by government authorities. Some of these birds cannot be returned to the wild for various reasons, but a select sub-population can be released if they meet criteria set forth by IUCN (the World Conservation Union) and CITES (Convention on the Trade in Endangered Species). The Indonesian Parrot Project has now carried out three such parrot releases.

(PRWeb April 09, 2008)

Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2008/04/prweb842734.htm

The First-ever Release of Endangered Salmon-crested Cockatoos Back into the Wild Following Their Confiscation from Smugglers

On March 16, 2006, history was made on the island of Seram, in the Maluku archipelago, Eastern Indonesia, with the first-known "soft-release" of three Salmon-crested (Seram) cockatoos back to the very forest where they were trapped eighteen months previously.

(PRWeb April 12, 2006)

Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/04/prweb370670.htm

Indiscriminate Slaughter of Rare Parrots and Cockatoos

The 'Collateral Damage' of the War on "Bird Flu."

(PRWeb April 04, 2006)

Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2006/04/prweb366967.htm

Project Bird Watch Offers Birding Eco Tours to Indonesia in 2006

See Parrots and Cockatoos in the Wild!
