Todd Phillips of The Last Well to Visit Liberia in Midst of Ebola Epidemic
(PRWEB) July 16, 2014 -- The West African nation of Liberia is experiencing the worst ever outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus, with Sierra Leone and Guinea also affected. As Liberians struggle to deal with the impact of Ebola, approximately one million of them struggle on a daily basis with the lack of access to clean drinking water.
To address the clean water challenge, Todd Phillips, founder and director of The Last Well (TLW), is traveling to Liberia on July 23. Once there, Phillips will meet with government officials and tribal leaders in an effort to increase the country’s involvement in The Last Well’s mission of bringing fresh water and the Gospel border-to-border by 2020.
“The Ebola outbreak is an extremely challenging task for the people and government of Liberia. The good news is that Liberian officials and leaders from other nations have committed resources to stem the tide of the disease,” Phillips said. “As the government is doing its best to address these challenges, we are committed to solving the water crisis through strategic partnerships with the Liberian government, NGOs, and corporations. By achieving our goals, more than one hundred Liberians a day will no longer be faced with death from water borne illnesses and they will hear the message of Jesus Christ in the process.”
In addition to meeting with partners who are drilling new wells and rehabilitating existing ones, Phillips will meet with the Liberian Vice President Joseph Boakai, Traditional Queen of Liberia (Ambassador Judi Ende), Chieftain of Liberia and others during an international press conference on July 29. Many writers, photographers and radio presenters also will be attending. Phillips has been working with Doc Lawson, a former Major League Soccer star and native Liberian, to extend TLW’s contacts in the West African country.
“Liberian officials have already pledged $14,000 to water projects, and we’re hoping to increase that commitment,” Phillips said. “The more Liberians who get involved, the faster we will be able to complete our mission. We’re grateful to Doc Lawson and our other partners for helping us get there.”
Last year, TLW completed 222 new well and well refurbishment projects, reaching nearly 250,000 people. In the first six months of 2014, TLW funded 267 water projects and aims to complete 450 by the end of the year. If all 450 projects are completed, close to 300,000 more Liberians will have access to clean water and hear the life-saving message of Jesus.
