Underground Elephant Expands to 22,021 Square Foot Office in East Village San Diego
(PRWEB) November 16, 2016 -- Underground Elephant, a 100-person digital marketing company, has expanded to its new headquarters in the redesigned Wellman-Peck warehouse in East Village, San Diego. The company has moved its headquarters to the 22,021 square foot ground floor space to accommodate for its rapid growth over the past eight years. CEO Jason Kulpa and BASILE Studio worked over the course of three years to transform the warehouse at 808 J Street from an empty brick warehouse to a cutting edge office that juxtaposes the history of the building with the future of innovation. "Underground Elephant’s design presented a unique opportunity to reimagine one of East Village’s remaining historical warehouses into a modern, innovative, and collaborative space that speaks to the core of San Diego’s community and cultural identity,” says Paul Basile, Principal and Lead Designer of BASILE Studio. The dynamic space, which recently won a San Diego Architectural Association Orchid Interior Design Award, was designed with details in mind to reflect the transparent and collaborative culture of the company. Every aspect of the space was thoughtfully crafted to inspire creativity, leadership, and innovation.
After winning San Diego Business Journal’s real estate “Deal of the Year” in East Village, Kulpa worked with BASILE Studio to bring the innovative design project to life. “Finding a ground floor space was important, as I want our employees to feel like they are a part of the community” says Kulpa. “The building also allows for an open layout, which mirrors our company’s transparent culture.” Every detail in the office’s design was hand selected to create an entirely unique environment. One of the main components in the design was the desire to bring the “outdoors in,” which was accomplished by creating a park in the middle of the office. The open space is complete with five century-old olive trees, park benches, picnic tables, and Golden Gate Bridge-style street lamps. From there, a paved walking path leads directly to the centerpiece of the office: a prairie-style schoolhouse, constructed with wood reclaimed from a Sierra Nevada forest fire. This multi-purpose space is used both both internal company meetings as well as conferences and community events.
Other collaborative spaces throughout the space include two glass walled conference rooms, a sunken living room, an underground speakeasy-style bunker, and a lofted game room. A self-service coffee and espresso bar with locally brewed beans offers employees a caffeinated start to their day, while the Ballast Point hosted bar provides an area for afternoon socialization and ideation. One of the space’s most quirky features, recently highlighted on Inc., is a transparent bathroom that faces the street, reminding both employees and the community not to take themselves too seriously. The office was also featured by San Diego Magazine for its participation in Park(ing) Day, where employees transformed the space in front of the office into a campsite to spread awareness about urban public space.
Underground Elephant’s headquarters has already garnered attention for both it’s unique design and ideal location. In both The New York Times and Union Tribune, UE was highlighted as one of the San Diego companies helping to establish East Village as a competitive technology hub through its new headquarters. The company was also featured as one of San Diego’s Coolest Companies as well as one of the city’s most creative office spaces. About the Building
The Wellman-Peck Building, commonly known as the T.R. Produce Warehouse, was built in 1933 and designed by Julius Kraft and Sons. The one and a half story industrial building has an exposed brick exterior that expresses the structural bays and its interior functions. The building was in a study and identified as one of 38 structures to be evaluated by the Historical Resources Board (HRB) as part of the implementation of the Ballpark and Ancillary Development projects. It was designated by the HRB in May 1999 as Historical Landmark #382. The construction of the office layout within the historic building was captured on a time-lapse video.
