Spiral Development announced today it has introduced Focalware, a photography application that calculates the position of the sun and moon anywhere in the world and at any time by utilizing GPS location and date information. Focalware is an iPhone application and is available at iTunes in the Photography category.

GIS Project Aimed at Keeping the Blue Ridge Parkway a Scenic Byway

As the Blue Ridge Parkway approaches its 75th anniversary, the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) is drawing on the GIS (geographic information systems) expertise of students at Warren Wilson College to help it propose a plan to manage secondary road access to the Blue Ridge Parkway over the next 20 years. The proposal is aimed at keeping the Blue Ridge Parkway a rural, scenic byway and ensuring that it does not become a commuter road that diminishes the visitor experience.

NOAA's National Climatic Data Center Renews Agreement with ERC Broadband

ERC Broadband announced today that it has signed an agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) to provide broadband services to NCDC. NCDC, based in Asheville, provides NOAA's climate data to millions of people. ERC Broadband is a vital partner in NCDC's mission to acquire and deliver these data. The new agreement formalizes the partnership between NOAA/NCDC and ERC Broadband and underscores how ERC Broadband is helping Asheville build its role and reputation in the national climate services community.

Indie Sci Fi Film with an Environmental Message Is Elevating Asheville's Billing as a Film City

When darkness descends on New York City the evening of September 19th, the international film community will get a stark and provocative glimpse into a future in which the world has been ruined by the degradation of the environment. Projected on a rooftop in Manhattan will be a scene from Moon Europa, one of ten outstanding narrative rough-cut film projects selected by the prestigious Independent Film Project, or IFP (http://www.ifp.org), for the 2007 Independent Film Lab. Moon Europa, written and directed by Chris Bower and produced by G. Craig Hobbs and Bower, was introduced at the Independent Film Lab several months ago and captured industry attention because of its environmental theme, its creative reliance on recycled, reused and salvaged materials in the sets and costumes to underscore the creative team's concern for the environment, and its innovative use of affordable, cutting-edge technologies. The guerilla, epic film is the outcome of a three-year effort involving approximately 150 volunteers from the Asheville, NC, media arts community.
