SHAPE encourages physicians to implement screening for subclinical (asymptomatic) atherosclerosis (cholesterol plaque build-up) in men age 45 and older, and women age 55 and older who are at risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. SHAPE recommends two scientifically proven non-invasive atherosclerosis tests: coronary artery calcification scoring (CACS) by a computed tomography (CT) scan and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) scanning by ultrasound. These tests have improved our ability to assess near-term heart attack risk in otherwise seemingly healthy individuals so that timely preventive strategies can be implemented.

(PRWeb February 08, 2011)

Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2011/02/prweb5047464.htm

SHAPE Awards SHAPE Provider Certification to 34 Medical Providers

Certification Program Promotes Early Detection and Treatment of Heart Attack Risk in Apparently Healthy People

(PRWeb September 09, 2010)

Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2010/09/prweb4477564.htm

SHAPE Task Force II Convenes to Review and Update SHAPE Guideline for Heart Attack Prevention

Hundreds of thousands of apparently healthy American men and women lack potentially life-saving treatment because of hidden risk. The Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Eradication (SHAPE) today announced the formation of SHAPE Task Force II to refine and update the First SHAPE Guideline. SHAPE Task Force II is an international group of leading cardiologists and cardiovascular researchers who share the belief that healthcare providers can do more, using non-invasive imaging tests, to assess and reduce an asymptomatic individual’s heart attack risk. SHAPE Task Force II will consider what has been learned through research and medical practice during the past four years since the publication of the First SHAPE Guideline and is expected to integrate these advances into an updated Second SHAPE Guideline.

(PRWeb August 09, 2010)

Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2010/08/prweb4364254.htm

SHAPE: "Give a Heart Attack Prevention Test for Father's Day"

The Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Eradication (SHAPE) is urging American families to use Father's Day as an opportunity to help their Dad avoid a heart attack. SHAPE agrees that Mr. Russert's death shows heart attacks are not easy to predict by the old fashioned and still prevailing approach that relies on the poor predictive power of risk factors and stress testing. They strongly believe that more accurate risk assessment using novel technologies followed by aggressive preemptive treatments of the right people and proper monitoring can result in a timely prevention and ultimately eradication of heart attacks. This goal is achievable in our lifetime and the SHAPE representatives urged national cardiovascular healthcare and research policy makers to commit necessary funding to accomplish this mission.

(PRWeb June 19, 2008)

Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2008/06/prweb1032414.htm

Last Minute Gift Idea for Dad: In Memory of NBC's Tim Russert, SHAPE Encourages Families to Give Dads a Heart Attack Prevention Test for Father's Day

Leading cardiologists from SHAPE (Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Eradication) once again called upon the nation to not trust treadmill stress tests and traditional risk assessment.

(PRWeb June 15, 2008)

Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2008/06/prweb1026054.htm

Guy Fernandez Memorial Golf Tournament in Baltimore, June 25

Golf Fore Heart 2008, the charity golf tournament started last year by Baltimore resident, JoAnne Zawitoski, in memory of her late husband, Guy Fernandez, will again take place on 25 June at the Mountain Branch Golf Club, Joppa Maryland. While multiple screening tests are approved for early detection of subclinical cancers, no tests are officially approved for detection of subclinical atherosclerosis, which underlies both heart attack and stroke. This void leaves many individuals - even those with severe atherosclerosis -unaware of their risk because they have no symptoms. In this context, leading cardiologists from the Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Eradication applaud the efforts of Dallas Heart Study researchers who discovered existing national heart attack prevention guidelines missed 27% of patients with plaque buildups in their heart providing important evidence that inexpensive imaging tests can identify patients at risk and lead to strategies that will prevent heart attacks. Independent of SHAPE, researchers with the Dallas Heart Study have confirmed that the most effective way to identify at-risk individuals is not to measure risk factors but to detect the underlying disease itself, atherosclerosis, as suggested by the SHAPE Guidelines.

(PRWeb June 08, 2008)

Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/2008/06/prweb1005434.htm

SHAPE Honors Director of the Framingham Heart Study and University of Virginia Professor for Achievements in Heart Attack Prevention

Dr. Valentin Fuster, presents Dr. Daniel Levy of Framingham Heart Study and Dr. Kamwe Akosah of University of Virginia the SHAPE Lifetime Achievement Award during the event; "Approaches to SHAPE the future of Primary Prevention: The New Framingham Risk Score and Beyond," held on March 29, 2008 at the Westin Hotel on Michigan Ave. in Chicago.
